Bank Barn Lookout

Project Summary

Bank Barn Lookout is a project fueled by the homeowners’ deep passion and lifelong connection to pastoral and agricultural life, bringing their roots full circle into their retirement home. This project began with a historic Midwest dairy barn from the 1870s, a structure that had outlived its original agricultural purpose. With dedication and care, the barn was carefully documented, deconstructed, cleaned, and repaired, before being transported and reassembled on a stunning Appalachian mountain site. The new location enhances the barn’s timeless beauty, surrounded by expansive views and thoughtful design elements to support multi-generational family living for years to come.

A true highlight of Bank Barn Lookout is the custom observation tower, designed to offer panoramic views of the breathtaking mountain landscape. This tower is the only alteration to the original timber frame, which was meticulously reconstructed to stand exactly as it did in its original form. For the observation tower, additional vintage timbers were sourced, chosen for their hand-hewn texture and matching patina, seamlessly blending with the rest of the historic timber structure.

With its rich history and the new life it has been given, Bank Barn Lookout is a legacy home that connects past and future, offering the homeowners a beautifully crafted retreat that honors their agricultural heritage and provides an inspiring, welcoming space for family gatherings for generations to come.
