Timber framing is a time-honored craft—considered an art by those who have mastered its intricacies, from the nuances of wood to the precision of joinery. But can these ancient techniques be brought into today’s high-tech world? The Modern Pantheon, designed by Tabberson Architects, is a testament to advanced, technical timber framing, proving that this art form is not only adaptable to the present but capable of thriving into the future.
Inspired by the iconic Roman Pantheon, this circular pavilion captures the spirit of its namesake with a dramatic open oculus at its apex, where light pours in, tracking the sun’s movement. Elegant radial timber rafters, each precisely supported by a diagonal brace, extend from the oculus ring to the outer ring, all crafted from solid wood. Mortise-and-tenon joinery is proudly marked by wooden pegs, while reinforced metal connections are seamlessly hidden, highlighting both craftsmanship and strength.
The pavilion introduces a modern twist to its historical inspiration. Rather than a complete circle, the structure radiates a graceful 270°, with one section covered in fritted glass and the remaining arc open to blend with a nearby game court. This open shelter serves as a gathering space for socializing and leisure, drawing people together within its rare, dynamic design. The Modern Pantheon not only provides a functional outdoor space but also inspires a new appreciation for the enduring beauty and possibilities of timber framing in contemporary architecture.
